Photographer Marlon James meets dancehall star Yellowman at his home in Kingston
I had no specific concept when I went to visit King Yellowman. Upon arriving, he told me he had four different looks he wanted to be photographed in and I went along with his conceptual idea. He had his sportswear, casual wear, music wear and formal wear. These are really his facets, things that make him comfortable: his fashion trend and also his persona.
I decided to collaborate with him and bring his ideas to life by looking at the grounds of his property to find interesting locations for each of the looks presented to me. I was trying to create something beautiful. I find beauty in people who are confident in who they are despite the fact that they don’t fit what society or Hollywood deems beauty. Imperfections tell stories and sometimes aid in building of characters, which I try to portray in my photography.
I actually was not conscious of the comic book style of the shoot while I was doing it. I use to be a comic book collector, reading stuff from Marvel, Image and DC Comics and graphic novels like Heavy Metal, which sometimes influence my ideas for photo shoots. I generally try to go against pop culture as much as possible. I even sometimes like to poke fun at what is considered popular culture or things that people seem to take seriously within that culture.CC #jamaica #portrait #yellowman #thechronic #chimurenga_SA
